Milia present as tiny pearly-white bumps just under the surface of the skin. (Multiple are called milia, singular is milium.)  They are common in all ages and in both males and females. They most often arise on the face and are prominent of the eyelids and cheeks. They are very common in newborns but can occur at any age of any skin type.

Milia are formed when keratin becomes entrapped beneath the outer layer of the skin, forming tiny cysts. They develop at the base of a hair follicle or sweat gland. Secondary milia form after something clogs the ducts leading to the skin surface, such as after an injury, burn, or blistering of the skin.

Treatment is not medically needed. Patients can elect removal for cosmetic reasons. Milia can be removed using cautery or excision. Dr. Sapra often recommends using a nightly Retinol (to open the pores) and the Zoe Bliss Brush to help prevent and minimize in the future as they can be recurrent. These products are available on The Skin Store.
