What is Dysport Injection?

Dysport® is a type of neurotoxin injectable used to reduce visible, dynamic wrinkles. It is made of abobotulinumtoxinA, which blocks muscle contractions to relax muscles beneath the skin and smooth out wrinkles.

Our skilled nurse injectors can use Dysport® to dramatically reduce the severity of “frown” or “glabellar” lines, which can appear between the eyebrows. Many of our patients develop these dynamic wrinkles (i.e., wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements) as they age and often desire a non-surgical treatment to refresh their appearance.

Am I a Good Candidate for Dysport®?

If you find yourself nodding your head to a few or many of these statements, Dysport® may be for you!

Desire for a Natural Look: You want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles without losing your natural facial expressions.

Preference for Non-Surgical Options: You’re looking for a non-invasive treatment with minimal downtime, avoiding surgical procedures.

Good Overall Health: You’re in good general health with no major underlying medical history that might affect the treatment.

Realistic Expectations: You understand that while Dysport® can significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, it doesn’t entirely stop the aging process.

Not Pregnant or Breastfeeding: Dysport® is not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Previous Treatments: You may have tried other wrinkle-reducing treatments and are looking for an alternative or complementary solution.

You Understand the Commitment: You’re ready for a treatment that offers temporary results and requires regular maintenance to sustain the effects.

Consult a Healthcare Professional: It is important to consult a healthcare professional to determine if Dysport® is the right treatment for you.

How Much Does Dysport® Cost?

At ICLS, the cost of Dysport® treatments is tailored to each individual’s needs, which can vary significantly based on the number of sessions required, combination with other treatments, and other specific factors. Compared to other botulinum toxin products, Dysport® is often considered cost-effective. Our pricing for Dysport® is $12 per unit with a minimum charge of $300 plus HST.

We strive to make your experience at ICLS as comfortable and hassle-free as possible. To this end, we accept all major payment methods and offer flexible financing options through our partnerships with iFinance and Beautifi. These programs can help make your care more affordable by allowing you to pay in installments. Our team is here to assist you with any questions you may have about these financial options.

How to Prepare for Dysport® Injections

To ensure the best possible results and minimize the risk of side effects, it’s important to properly prepare for your Dysport® treatment. Here are the steps you should follow before your appointment:

  • Discuss Your Medical History: Inform your practitioner about any medical conditions, allergies, or medications you take, including over-the-counter medications, supplements, and herbal products. If you have an egg allergy, be sure to inform your nurse or practitioner before receiving Dysport®. This is important as some formulations of botulinum toxin, including Dysport®, may contain egg-derived proteins. If you have an allergy to cow’s milk protein, inform your practitioner. Cow’s milk protein may be an inactive ingredient in some formulations and can cause allergic reactions in some individuals.
  • Avoid Certain Medications and Supplements: If medically advisable, stop taking aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and vitamin E supplements 3-5 days before your treatment. These can increase the risk of bruising and bleeding at the injection site. Avoid consuming green tea during this time, as it may also contribute to bruising.
  • Keep Your Skin Clean: On the day of your treatment, ensure your face is clean and free of makeup, lotions, or other skincare products.

How Is Dysport® Administered?

Like our other non-surgical options, Dysport® injections are minimally invasive and typically require little to no recovery time. To perform the treatment, we will use a tiny, sterilized needle to deliver a series of around five “micro-injections” into the forehead and around the eyebrows.

Dysport® injections are generally finished within 15 minutes to half an hour, and patients usually do not experience any discomfort; however, we can apply a topical anesthetic if you so desire. Discomfort is extremely minimal and will last only a few seconds.

Recovery from Dysport® Treatment

After your Dysport® wrinkle treatment, you can expect a relatively smooth recovery process with minimal disruption to your daily activities. However, following post-treatment care guidelines is essential to ensure the best possible results and minimize any potential side effects.

Immediately after the procedure, you may notice some minor redness or swelling at the injection sites, which should subside within a few hours. Occasionally, the tiny needle used during the injections may puncture a small blood vessel, resulting in a bruise about the size of a millimetre to a centimetre. This bruise can last approximately 5-10 days but can be easily concealed with makeup.

To avoid any unwanted side effects, it’s important not to touch or rub the treated areas for the rest of the day. This precaution helps prevent the migration of the product to other areas, ensuring it stays exactly where it’s needed to achieve optimal results. Additionally, you should avoid lying down for the remainder of the day to prevent putting unnecessary pressure on the treatment areas.

Strenuous activities like exercise should be avoided for at least 24 hours following your Dysport® injections. This helps reduce the risk of bruising and swelling, allowing your skin to heal properly. If you experience a slight headache after the treatment, don’t worry—it’s completely normal and can happen to some individuals. You can take Tylenol to alleviate any discomfort, but avoid using other pain relievers like aspirin, as they can increase the likelihood of bruising.

How Many Sessions of Dysport® Do You Need?

The effects of Dysport® often last between three and five months. Please be aware that every patient is different, and the treatment will last longer in some than others. For optimal results, we advise patients to return for follow-up sessions. We would happily help you determine a timeline for your Dysport® experience during your initial consultation.

What Are the Benefits of Dysport®?

Dysport® offers several key benefits for those looking to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and achieve a more youthful look:

  • Quick Results: Dysport® begins to work within 2 to 3 days, making it a fast-acting solution for wrinkle reduction.
  • Smooth, Natural-Looking Results: Dysport®’s formulation allows it to diffuse evenly, creating a smooth and natural appearance, particularly in larger areas like the forehead.
  • Minimally Invasive: With Dysport®, you can achieve significant cosmetic improvements without the need for surgery, meaning minimal downtime and a quick return to your daily activities.
  • Long-Lasting Effects: The results of Dysport® can last up to 3 to 4 months, providing sustained wrinkle reduction with regular maintenance treatments.
  • Versatility: Dysport® is effective for treating a wide range of dynamic wrinkles, including frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines.
  • Tailored Treatment: Dysport® treatments can be customized to address your specific concerns, ensuring that the results align with your aesthetic goals.
  • Effective for Vertical Lines: Dysport® is particularly effective for treating vertical lines between the eyebrows, also known as glabellar lines.

What Are the Side Effects of Dysport®?

Dysport® is known for its safety and effectiveness, with no generalized side effects associated with the treatment. However, as with any cosmetic procedure, there are some potential risks and side effects, though they are rare.

One possible side effect is the weakening of a nearby muscle, which could result in a temporary loss of function in that area. This occurs if the product migrates beyond the intended treatment zone, which is uncommon when administered by an experienced practitioner.

Other less common side effects might include localized bruising, swelling, or redness at the injection sites, which typically resolve independently within a few days. Some patients may also experience mild headaches after treatment, but these are usually short-lived and can be managed with over-the-counter pain relief like Tylenol. While rare, some patients may experience muscle spasms and should consult their doctor if these symptoms occur.

What Are Dysport® Alternatives?

Dysport® may be preferable if you’re seeking quicker results, particularly for larger areas like the forehead, or if you have specific types of dynamic wrinkles that are best treated by relaxing the underlying muscles. It offers a smooth, natural look without the need for more invasive procedures, making it an excellent choice for those who want to maintain their youthful appearance with minimal downtime.

Whether Dysport or another treatment is right for you depends on your goals, the types of wrinkles you want to address, and your desired results. Other alternatives we offer include:

Botulinum Toxin Type A Injections (e.g., Botox®): Like Dysport®, Botox® is a botulinum toxin type A injection that temporarily relaxes facial muscles to reduce wrinkles. The primary difference lies in the formulation and diffusion properties. Botox® is often preferred for treating smaller areas or very specific wrinkles, such as those around the eyes (crow’s feet) or mouth.

Dermal Fillers: Unlike Dysport®, which relaxes muscles to smooth out wrinkles, dermal fillers work by adding volume beneath the skin. Fillers containing hyaluronic acid (like Juvederm® or Restylane®) are particularly effective for deeper lines and wrinkles or for restoring lost volume in areas like the cheeks or lips.

Is Dysport® Better Than Botox®?

Dysport® and Botox® are both highly effective treatments for reducing the appearance of wrinkles, and the choice between them often comes down to individual needs and preferences. Dysport® tends to work faster and may diffuse more evenly across larger areas, making it ideal for treating broader regions like the forehead. On the other hand, Botox® is often preferred for more targeted treatment areas, such as around the eyes. At ICLS, we offer both treatments, and our experienced practitioners can help you determine which option is best suited for your specific goals.
